Summer is such an awesome time for families to enjoy one another and of course you cannot leave out the sunshine, popsicles, ice cream, beach days and water park fun. But it's also a great time to keep the kiddos learning so they'd be ready for school once September comes around.
I'll be sharing below of some great things I've learned from my years as a teacher to prevent summer learning loss.
1. DON'T STOP READING
Take advantage of your local library. It's an amazing place to get books and they have incredible programs for your kiddos to participate in. So go check your local library and see what fun programs they have throughout the summer.
2. SUMMER JOURNALS
Gather some notebooks, pens, crayons, markers, pencil crayons and pencils and let the kiddos create. Make it fun by asking them if they'd like to draw or write about the fun they had throughout the day. It's a great way to keep the kiddos penmanship and imaginations going.
3. GET COOKING
Let the kiddos come into the kitchen and get messy. Make it a fun time by asking them of what recipes they want to create. During the cooking experience have them count how many cups needed, how the ingredients mix together and why they react the way they do. Its awesome to promote math and science skills.
4. LET THEM PLAY
I know this sounds counter-productive but play is such an incredible skill for the kiddos to experience. Throughout this process, the kiddos are using their imagination skills, inquiry skills to figure out what they'd like to do. Put out the legos, blocks, duplo, K'nex, etc you would be surprised about what they create.
5. KEEP'em LEARNING WHILE TRAVELLING
Before you leave for your vacation destination, check for the local museums, local historical sites or science centres for the kiddos to explore learning about the local history.
6. FORM A NEIGHBOURHOOD SUMMER GROUP
Talk with your local moms of kiddos around the same age. Ask if you can form a play group and make fun themes each time the group connects. Its a great way to get to know the local kiddos in the neighbourhood.
7. AWESOME LEARNING APPS
There so many incredible apps out there for the kiddos to have fun with all the while learning. Some great ones such as LINGO KIDS a fun app that introduces children to english through games, LIPA LAND is also another great app of educational games, REVOLUTION MATH is a great app for the older kiddos to continue their math skills.
What are some fun ways you continue summer learning. I hope these tips above help.
